MANILA, Philippines — Organizers of the ABS-CBN Foundation’s Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig are optimistic that the 10.10.10 Run for Pasig River on Sunday can attract 120,000 to break a Guinness World Record for a running event.
Around 140,000 race kits were reportedly distributed for the fun run aimed at raising funds to rehabilitate the Pasig River, with 50,000 coming from religious group El Shaddai.
The event will have three different starting points.
Other participants will come from schools and universities, government, communities and different private sectors.
The organizers are hoping to break the existing record of 110,000 for the most number of running participants set in the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco, California in 1988.
Officials from the Guinness World Record will be present in the event to observe and formalize if the race will break the world record.
“This run is literally a kapit-bisig of all sectors. It will be really amazing. If we get international recognition by breaking the world record, all of us are saying to the world that ‘We want the Pasig River clean.’” said ABS-CBN Foundation managing director Gina Lopez.
Runners can participate in the 3K, 5K and 10K categories. The 3K participants will start in Diokno corner Bayshore Boulevard at the SM Mall of Asia, 5K runners in Vicente Sotto corner Magdalena Jalandoni in CCP Complex, and 10K contestants in Ayala corner Makati Avenue with all participants converging in one finish line at the SM Mall of Asia.
The 21K category, which will start in Marikina, will only be a ceremonial run to be participated in by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police.
Last year, 23,000 runners joined the Philippine International Marathon: A Run for the Pasig River where foreigners topped the competitive race.
This time, it will be fun run for a cause. The top three winners, however, will be judged by eye and will receive token prizes of P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000 along with a medal.
