MANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm “Juaning” is going to bring heavy rains over parts of central and northern Luzon and Metro Manila on Wednesday, the Philippine Atmopspheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday.
Juaning is going to make landfall in Polilio Island between 8 and 10 a.m., and rains in the National Capital Region (NCR) and southern Aurora province will reach its peak between 1 and 3 p.m., according to PAGASA officer-in-charge and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Graciano Yumul.
Juaning is expected to traverse the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales and Pangasinan.
He said Juaning will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon, bringing more rains over NCR and nearby provinces.
As of 4 a.m., Juaning was spotted 90 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon and was moving west northwest at 11 kilometers per hour (kph).
It was packing maximum winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph.
Public storm signal no. 2 remains hoisted over the following areas:
Yumul said Juaning is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Friday morning.
According to Yumul, Juaning has been pouring 20 – 25 millimeters per hour of rain, 40% of what Ondoy brought in 2009.
He added that PAGASA is now monitoring the situation in Angat and Ipo dams.
He said people living near the dams will be warned six hours before any release of water.
According to Dr. Susan Espinueva, PAGASA-DOST Hydrometeorology Division chief, as of 6 a.m. water levels in La Mesa and Ipo dams were near their spilling levels at 79.42 meters (.73 m deficit) and 99.88 meters (.32 m deficit), respectively.
