MANILA, Philippines – American boxer Glen Tapia, currently a sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao, has found out for himself why the 7-division world champion is dangerous.
The 5’11” bruiser from New Jersey traded punches with the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion in a 4-round sparring session in Baguio City last Thursday.
“We already knew he’s fast and has power, and he has good foot speed,” Tapia said in a report posted on Examiner.com.
But what makes Pacquiao dangerous, according to Tapia, is the Filipino boxer’s ability to move around his opponents with ease.
“What people don’t know, he’ll throw his punches and turn and then he will hit you some more,” said Tapia, who boasts of more than 100 victories as an amateur. He also holds 5 knockouts on 7 wins as a pro.
“They should be scared,” he said of Pacquiao’s opponents.
However, most boxers are willing to trade against the smaller Pacquiao for a chance to hike their fight purse.
The only boxer who reportedly ducked the Filipino, despite the lure of a multi-million dollar payday, is unbeaten American boxer, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Pacquiao is scheduled to fight 3-time world champion Antonio Margarito of Mexico for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight on November 13.
His trainer, Freddie Roach, brought in Tapia to help prepare the 5’6” Pacquiao against the 5’11” Mexican.
Also lined up to spar with Pacquiao is 6-footer Michael Medina of Mexico, who has a professional record of 24 wins against 2 losses.
