BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – It was raining all morning in Baguio on Monday but Manny Pacquiao went on with his training.
Together with another world champion, Amir Khan, the boxers ran under the rain and had one of the toughest workouts yet.
The coaches are focusing on improving Manny’s speed.
At the track, conditioning coach Alex Ariza had the boxers do repeated sprints, alternating with steady runs.
After that followed lots of footwork drills still with the goal of making Pacquiao quicker on his feet. Ariza pushed Manny really hard.
Manny said they will be doing all sorts of speed drills in the next few weeks.
The added bulk and weight he’s put on has affected his quickness, and Manny is determined to get it back.
And no matter the weather, the training cannot be halted.
Pacquiao has also brought back abs (abdominal muscles) work using the rattan stick.
Pounding on his stomach is extremely painful but is great mental conditioning.
Aside from the strenuous physical fitness routine, Pacquiao also went through a rigid boxing workout at the gym which was open to the media.
Adding inspiration to Manny was the presence of his promoter Bob Arum who flew in from the United States. His wife, Jinkee, was also there.
After practice, Manny also spent some time rehearsing his repertoire of songs with Madonna Decena, Lito Camo and his MP Band.
Pacquiao has a concert planned in the US after the fight with Antonio Margarito.
Pacquiao sang love songs to Jinkee and got into a beat that even got Arum dancing.
The group had a fun time at the impromptu mini-concert.
Team Pacquiao will travel down to Manila this week and fly out to the US to continue training for the November 14 battle.
