MANILA, Philippines — From a scale of 1 to 10, "Fighter of the Decade" Manny Pacquiao gave himself a 9 ½ rating on Friday with regards to his current conditioning.
The 7-division champion admitted that he still isn’t contented with his speed as he prepares for his fight against Mexico's Antonio Margarito on November 13 in Texas.
From Baguio City, Pacquiao went down to Manila for his final training day in the Philippines.
Despite the heavy rain, he toiled for two hours at the Rizal Memorial Sports Coliseum to target a specific speed they wanted against Margarito.
Conditioning coach Alex Ariza had him doing sprint and footwork exercises.
Ariza even scolded Pacquiao for taking a short rest under a shed, telling the boxer not to mind the weather.
Pacquiao will be fighting Margarito for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight title.
Still working on his speed
Pacquiao, reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion, said earlier he is working on regaining his speed after becoming sluggish with the added weight.
He has reportedly cut his weight down to 148 pounds to regain his agility. The Filipino boxer reportedly went above 150 pounds before deciding to shed the added weight. The agreed weight limit for the Margarito bout is at 151 pounds.
“Medyo mabagal nang konti ‘yung reaksyon ng katawan at mga punches. Last three weeks, focus kami sa speed (The body reaction and punches were quite slow. In the last three weeks, we'll be focusing on speed),” the Sarangani province congressman said.
Pacquiao is scheduled to leave for the US on Saturday. -- With a report from Edwin Sevidal, dzMM
