”The odds are totally crazy,” Arum said.
Pacquiao remained the heavy favorite so close to the fight and based on the odds the only way he could lose this one is if he doesn’t show up at the Cowboys Stadium on fight night.
The latest coming out of the online betting stations likebet.us.com has Pacquiao at -650 (meaning you need $650 just to win a hundred bucks) and Margarito at +425 (meaning $100 wins $425).
Just over a week ago, Pacquiao was at -525 and Margarito at +325.
Arum said the odds are not a clear reflection of how the fight would go.
Last Monday, Arum, who promotes both Pacquiao and Margarito, said the Filipino champion is in danger of losing because of all the distractions and extra curricular activities while training.
”If the fight happened on Saturday Margarito will win the fight. He (Pacquiao) should stop all these nonsense,” was Arum’s alarming statement.
He believes that the odds should be closer than what the oddsmakers are saying.
”This fight should be only 2 1/2 to one and not five or six to one. It’s crazy. That’s just Filipinos betting on Manny,” said Arum.
And once the Mexican money comes in then the odds should get closer.
”No way could any rational person make the odds that high. I really think 2 1/2 to one is the proper way,” said Arum.
Besides, the 78-year-old lawyer said Margarito is doing everything in training that it’s very hard to ignore the possibility of a major upset.
”He’d doing everything possible to get himself ready for this fight – physically and mentally,” said Arum.
If you’re Margarito, why not?
Arum said the former welterweight champion, who at 5’ 11 1/2” stands almost five inches taller than Pacquiao, is in for the biggest paycheck of his tumultuous career.
Arum disclosed that Margarito is guaranteed $3 million for the WBC super-welterweight contest pegged at catchweight of 151 lb.
Margarito is coming off a one-year suspension following the illegal handwraps incident in his fight with Shane Mosley in January of 2009. He could wash his hands with a big win over Pacquiao.
”Yes. He is guaranteed $3 million and he has an upside on the pay-per-view. So if everything goes the way I think it would go, he should make approximately between five to six million,” said Arum.
Pacquiao. on his part, is scheduled to wrap up his Baguio training today, head down to Manila to resume training and leave for Los Angeles on Saturday for the final push.
Anyone who fights Pacquiao becomes a millionaire, in case he’s not one yet, and Arum mentioned Joshua Clottey who can quit boxing and live a good life the rest of his life after facing Pacquiao last March.
“Clottey doubled his purse with the upside $1.2 million (on 700,000 pay-per-view buys and a total of $35.3 million in revenue),” said Arum.
Margarito’s biggest was $1.5 million when he fought Cotto and scored a thrilling knockout win in 2008.
”And Margarito knows that if he beats Pacquiao then sky’s the limit,” said Arum.
