MANILA, Philippines — A multi-awarded sports journalist and boxing promoter from Australia has heaped praises to Filipino boxers, citing that the two-fisted fighters from the Philippines are the cream of the crop in Asia.
Australian Peter Maniatis, who has reaped numerous awards as boxing promoter, told Kenneth Ragpala of FilipinoBoxingJournal.com that "when it comes to boxing, the talent pool in the Philippines is the best in Asia.”
Maniatis said Filipino fighters can be compared to “American and Mexican boxers when it comes to raw skills.”
He said this is the reason he keeps coming back to the country.
Maniatis, a former amateur boxing champion, is a 4-time Victorian Promoter of the Year. He is famous in Australia for his boxing events, which were launched via a home-based sports channel.
Looking for the next Pinoy champ
Maniatis will be visiting Davao City next month to witness Filipino prospect Balweg Bangoyan's fight against Lanao del Norte’s Eric Macas on November 13. The bout will be in a card Maniatis formed with Filipino promoter Zander Kahn of ZK International Promotions.
He is also set to check out potential boxers in the area.
Maniatis said there are no boundaries in producing world boxing talents given “the right facilities, training program, and a very good management team.”
“I can make that happen, which is why I always visit the Philippines to scout for potential world champions,” he said.
‘Thank you Filipino boxers’
Maniatis, who currently hosts the high-rating KO Boxing Show— which will commemorate its 8th anniversary this November, expressed his gratitude to both boxing fighters and fans here in the country.
“The Filipino boxing community has been a great help in making the show what it is. My thanks go out to those who have helped me produce great episodes when I was filming in Manila and Cebu,” he said.
Maniatis has featured numerous Filipino fighters as guests, including 7-division champion Manny Pacquiao, superstar Nonito Donaire, former world champion Brian Viloria, and several boxers under ALA (Antonio L. Aldeguer) Promotions.
The Aussie promoter has also worked on a documentary featuring ALA Promotions a few months back.
